What
PTE is an organization that takes a unique approach towards slowing the spread of the HIV virus in China. We believe that one of the most overlooked problems in the world's fight against HIV/AIDS is the fact that of the over 40 million people currently living with HIV, only 10% actually know they are infected. This means that nearly 36 million HIV positive people in the world do not know that they are in fact positive. These people can not prevent the further spread of the virus nor can they take anti retroviral medications that have the ability to significantly improve their health and prolong their lives.
PTE believes that two things: fear of discrimination and general lack of knowledge are major contributing factors to people not being tested for HIV. Thus we design our education programs to specifically target these two things and sum them up through four main areas: 1) education, 2) awareness, 3) testing and 4) anti-discrimination.
In order to meet the challenge of reaching such a large population group (China's student population is over 250 million) we will be designing and piloting a teacher training program this coming Fall. By training teachers and providing them with the knowledge, resources and support they need to teach their students about HIV, we are able to ensure that our programs are wide-reaching and sustainable.
